What nature teaches us about end-of-year planning

When I’m not in the weeds of Asana, I spend a lot of my time in as a much-less seasoned gardener in my backyard. As I started planning my winter garden, I was surprised to learn that not all seeds actually enjoy the sun. In fact, some of them require cold, dark conditions to germinate. That dormancy isn’t inactivity, it’s preparation.

For me, this nugget of insight gave me the perspective that even in periods of rest, the seeds I’ve planted can still grow. Moreover; if I do not rest, they will not grow. I see this happening with my clients as well, a combined sense of eagerness and end-of-year stagnation. December is a great time to plant the ideas and improvements that need space to take shape: retrospectives, refining workflows, tightening documentation, and setting the pieces in motion that will support a stronger start in the year to come. If the pace feels quieter right now, let it be. Things will still take root.
