In August 2026, Asana announced that Round Robin assignments were now a built-in feature of their standard rule builder.
Prior to this update, the only way to achieve a true Round-Robin style automation was by building an Asana AI Studio rule and providing specific guidance.
What is Round Robin?
Round robin is a system or order in which work is assigned out in a particular order, ensuring that distribution or volume of tasks is equal.
Example: Peter, Daniela, Jamie, and Annie all receive work requests through a request queue. In round robin, each task would be assigned out in that order as new work comes in.
Task 1: Peter
Task 2: Daniela
Task 3: Jamie
Task 4: Annie
Task 5: The round robin begins again with Peter
Step-by-Step Instructions
To find the Round Robin option, you will need to adjust your options within the Set assignee to action within the rule builder.

Other Round Robin Set-up Use Cases
There are instances where your Round Robin roster may be different. Below are a few snapshots of how I would build these based on different team use-cases.
Creative Teams
Use Case: Task assignments have a pre-set order based on the asset requested when new requests are received.

Sales/BDR
Use Case: New leads are assigned out by territory based on a rotating order as they come in.

IT Requests
Use Case: New IT Requests are delegated in a specific order based on available devs for the project.

Other helpful touches
Weight your rotation order based on capacity. You can also enter users multiple times if, for example, they have more capacity. You can have them twice in a row, or staggered in between other assignees.

Change the order by clicking and dragging. You can add, remove, or adjust the order as needed directly within the rule builder.

Skip out-of-office teammates. This one is huge! If you don’t want work to pile up in someone’s queue while they’re out of office, check this box! Their turn will be skipped. Below, you’ll see Annie is currently out of office, so work will be delegated between Bree and Daniela.
